In chapter forty we find out how badly Fran is injured. She has pain throughout her body. They search for the cause. She gets worse as the Scout goes methodically through its scans, then waits for instructions. Elgin aches to do something to stop her suffering.

In chapter thirty-nine Elgin watches over the wakers while Stanton pores over the data from the destruction of the little comet. The Scout’s fixation on destroying it seems almost insane. They’re sure no one could have survived. After waiting for instructions from the inner system, the Scout starts probing Green Comet with radar. Fran is injured.

In chapter thirty-eight we’re shown the observation post, where the five will be spending the foreseeable future. Two would be on shift at all times while three were in light hibernation. When the Scout arrives, the three sleepers are awoken. The little comet bravely fights the deadly Scout.
