Open Source Seeds

If you thought Open Source was all about computer software, you’re not alone. Most people, if they’ve heard of Open Source, will think about Free Software, such as Linux and Mozilla Firefox. Even WordPress, the software on which this blog is written, is Open Source, one reason why I chose it. In addition, LibreOffice, which I used to write Green Comet, and Calibre, used to convert it to ePub format, are Open Source software. Then there’s Audacity, which I used to edit the recordings.

The concept of Open Source reaches beyond software, though. For instance, there’s Creative Commons, the open licensing system I used to set Green Comet free. The “source” of the novel – the story and the characters – is open for people to read, share and modify, just like Open Source software. And now some people have taken the concept and applied it to something really critical: seeds. They’re working to make the “source” of seeds – the germ plasm – open for people to use and share. Their free seed pledge means that the genetic resources in the seeds can’t be patented or otherwise locked away. They will stay in the commons forever. The first release of Open Source seeds took place this year, as announced on the Open Source Seed Initiative website.

The OSSI mission is “maintaining fair and open access to plant genetic resources worldwide.” In a world where people are trying to alienate and lock away so many things, Open Source seeds, like similarly open culture and software, are vitally important.

Justice

justice-1

justice-Sandel-85x85

Do you like philosophy? Have you ever wished you could sit in on a lecture at Harvard University? Thanks to the Internet and Professor Michael Sandel, you can enjoy both. His lecture series, Justice, was recorded in a great lecture hall at Harvard and is available for you to audit, free, in comfort and at your own pace.

justice-2

Is it ever right to kill one to save many? How do the rights of individuals measure against the will of the majority? Duty versus self-interest. Pre-determination versus self-determination.

Watch Professor Sandel ignite the fire of justice in the young minds of his students. See how they react to the challenges he gives them. Think about how you would answer his questions. These twelve lectures, each about a half-hour, will leave their mark on you. You might find yourself thinking about justice as you never have before. You might even go to the community forum and join the discussion.

justice-3

Go ahead. It can’t hurt.-)

Review – Zero Sum Game – SL Huang – CC-BY-NC-SA

Available at Unglue.it, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo

Author’s website

Zero Sum Game has action. Lots and lots of action. Cas Russell is a math savant. She uses her talent for instantly perceiving trajectories and vectors and probabilities in her profession: retrievals. People pay her to retrieve items for them. Her lethal skills are useful in her work.

Rio is the only person Cas trusts. He’s a religious psychopath who hurts people for God. Given that he enjoys hurting people, it’s a good thing he has a moral compass.

Arthur Tresting is a private investigator. He loathes Rio for the monster he is, and despises Cas for her profession and her convenient ethics, but he’s an honorable man. He has a client and has to work with Cas and Rio to do his job.

What begins as a simple retrieval job for Cas Russell soon becomes a struggle for survival against a shadowy, all-powerful organization.

Zero Sum Game is a good read. It’s a good story well told. SL Huang is a good writer. The proofreading and editing are of professional quality, and the ebook formatting is excellent.

I recommend dropping over to Unglue.it and downloading it.
