A fall streak hole can appear in altocumulus or cirrocumulus cloud. It looks as if part of the cloud just fell out, leaving a hole. Often you can see streaks of ice crystals extending down below it. A fall streak hole is also known as a hole punch cloud, a skypunch or a cloud hole, among other names.

The hole is caused by the sudden freezing of super-cooled water in the cloud. Water can cool to well below freezing without forming droplets or crystals if there is no source of nucleation to allow it. The sudden introduction of a nucleation process sets off a domino effect, and the hole and fall streaks can form very rapidly. One source of nucleation is the disturbance caused by a passing aircraft.

Other than its association with the mentioned cloud types, a fall streak hole does not signify any particular kind of weather. Neither does it indicate that a UFO just punched through the cloud.

The Case of the Witch and Her Cat

Pepper & Carrot - David Revoy

Pepper & Carrot – David Revoy

As if you needed another example of the power of Creative Commons and Free Software.  I introduce you to David Revoy and his creation, Pepper & Carrot, a much-loved comic strip about a witch and her cat.  David is slowly building a following for his work, while releasing lovingly crafted comic strips into the world at a careful, measured pace.  His work is free to see, and free to use.  Others are encouraged to re-use Pepper & Carrot in whole or in part, and release their own derivatives, even charging for them if they want.  The only requirement is that they acknowledge and attribute him when they do so.

All this is possible because the entire comic strip is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC-BY). Other than CC0, this is the most permissive licensing option Creative Commons offers. Works under these terms can not only be copied, but also remixed and built upon, including for commercial uses. Re-users just have to attribute David Revoy as the author.

There are problems of course.  Cases of people who don’t attribute him properly when they use his work.  Fortunately, those cases are more often the result of ignorance than they are of malice.  A matter of not understanding their obligations, rather than one of deliberately trying to shirk them.  Luckily it’s more the exception than the rule.

Go read the article.  Go to David’s website and check out his work.  It’s a nice story.

Sunset During Fire Season

sunset-during-fire-season-1-2400
Much of western Canada is on fire. They’ve sent army personnel into Saskatchewan. It’s not that bad here, but it still got smoky.

Sunset during fire season can be pretty. Yes, that’s really my view. You should be able to pick out at least six layers of hills.

Since I took these pictures we’ve had wind and rain that cleared the sky. Just before that the temperature was bumping up against forty degrees, and I haven’t heard anyone complain about the cooler weather.-)

Here’s hoping the wildfires settle down.
