The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages.

Article 14.

(1) Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.
(2) This right may not be invoked in the case of prosecutions genuinely arising from non-political crimes or from acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.

This article says that if you are being persecuted in your own country, then you have the right to seek asylum in other countries. While this stops short of preventing abuses within a country, it at least provides the possibility of escaping and seeking sanctuary elsewhere.

Part 2 of the article makes it clear that it doesn’t apply to genuine criminals.

More Truck Grills

Credit Jalopnik

Someone agrees with me. As I said in my original article about truck grills, pickup trucks are getting way too big, especially the front ends. It’s not as if the grills need to be that big to contain what’s behind them. A lot of it is just air. They’re only that big to gratify something in the potential buyer. Some need to be sitting in a big vehicle.

The Jalopnik article focuses not on the buyer, but on the designers. It professes to be concerned for their mental health. Go and see for yourself.

Old Look for Green Comet

Back to the original theme we go. I tried a new one because I was warned that the old one might not handle mobile devices as well as it should. All was fine for a while, then the new one stopped displaying the comments under the posts. It said how many were there, but it refused to show them. So we’re back on the old theme, at least for now. I wouldn’t mind using a new theme, but the process of finding one is just too onerous. It’s not easy to find a theme that will support all the features of the old one. My enthusiasm has been dulled by the failure of the last replacement, too.

I’ll keep a languid eye out for a suitable new theme, but we’re sticking with this one for now.
