This reading is chapter nine of The Fancesians, the final book in the Green Comet trilogy. The people living and working at this laser facility don’t seem to have the high level of care that they are used to. Things look worn and neglected. Worse, they find signs of the privatization of their communal property. The ideals of the comet people seem to be deteriorating as much as the infrastructure.
