They thought that the Makers might cut off their laser propulsion, and they did.
This reading is chapter four of The Francesians, the third book in the Green Comet trilogy. The comet people are finally heading home. They feel lucky that the Makers’ lasers stayed on as long as they did. They should be able to make it to the turn where they switch to a set of autonomous lasers. Then it’s a clean shot home.
