Novel number nine is flowing out of my pen. I’ve given it a working title of Night Soil but I’m sure that will change. This is book three of the Vin Stone series, and it’s beginning to look like this will be more than the usual trilogy. I had some of the usual wondering whether or not I’d be able to write it, but it’s coming just as easily as the others. As usual, when I get a good first sentence, the rest follows. And my characters always show me the way, so it’s sometimes a matter of writing fast enough to keep up with them.

Coffee and fountain pens will get me through.

The image is a crop of the one I’ve been using, in different colors, for book covers for this series.

We’re at the three-quarter intermission in the writing of The Road for a Coward, and I’m beginning to think that the working title won’t be the final title this time. With all the previous books I ended up using the working title when I published them. This time, though, the book isn’t turning out to be enough like the title to justify keeping it. That’s what a working title is for, though, right? Just something to get you through the writing of the book, then you’re supposed to pick something that reflects the actual story.

I’m still enjoying writing it. There have been some bits of life intervening and causing delays and slow-downs, but when I can get to it, I’m liking it. My characters are really beginning to show their true natures, and the relationships between them are developing. The elements that I’ve introduced so far are showing me how they’re going to affect the story as we approach the end. I always wonder before starting a new book whether I will be able to find enough words to get us through it. But, they are always there. I’m glad because I really enjoy seeing how the story comes out.

So there’s the three-quarter report on my novel, The Road for a Coward (for the time being.) I estimate another two months of writing, then it’s on to all the mechanical stuff. Proofing, editing, formatting and recording. I’d better get at it.

We’re at the halftime intermission in the writing of The Road for a Coward. Time to assess progress and make plans for the second half. It’s what people do, right? Like the talking heads during the intermission at a game.

I’m enjoying writing this book, as usual. I always wonder before starting whether it will be harder this time. Is there still water in the well? Will the words be there? But, whenever I sit down in the morning and pick up a pen, the words come. It seems like all I need to do is come up with a good opening sentence, and the rest will come. Then it’s the fun of seeing where the characters want to take me. I tell them where we have to go, and then follow them around as they take us there. Sometimes they get excited and try to run away with the story. Then I have to be firm with them. That’s what I enjoy about writing. Thinking every day about the growing story. Seeing it develop as I write it, seeing what happens next. Learning more about my characters as I get to know them better. Showing them where we’re going, and following along as they take us there. And sometimes reining them in as they head off in directions of their own. I’m liking these characters as I get to know them. I won’t mind spending more time with them.

So there’s the halftime report on my novel, The Road for a Coward. So far, so good. Now it’s another three or four months of writing, then there’s the proofing, preparing it for publication and recording it. Back to work. Pen up, head down and get those words on paper.

There’s a lot of interesting stuff here, but mostly this website exists as a place for the Green Comet trilogy and my other novels to live.

These free novels, Creative Commons licensed Green Comet, and its sequels Parasite Puppeteers and The Francesians, tell an expansive story of love and adventure on an inhabited comet.
